To Connect Or Not To Connect…

April 20th, 2009

that is the question. We just released Facebook Connect today for StudyBlue.com. For those who don’t know, Facebook Connect is a way to allow users to seamlessly “connect” their Facebook account and information with other sites like StudyBlue.

In the world of social networking, the new fad is Universal ID.  People spend countless hours developing their online personas through whatever web portal suits their fancy.  Maybe you are a die-hard member of MySpace or Facebook.  Some people prefer Google or Yahoo profiles. Still others may dig their AIM or MSN account.  Whatever service you are addicted to, chances are they have developed a way for you to traverse the web using the profile you’ve worked so hard to maintain.  Given the fact that 99+% of our users are Facebook fanatics, we chose to integrate with Facebook Connect.

Now, StudyBlue users can login to their existing StudyBlue accounts with one-click.  If you are logged into Facebook, and you’ve already connected your StudyBlue and Facebook accounts, you will automatically be logged into StudyBlue.com. Pretty sweet……for now……

While it appears that Facebook is here to stay, there is no saying that Facebook will be the ‘goto’ college student website in 5, 10, or 15 years.  That being said, it’s tought to commit the existence of your website to another website. For this reason, we’re doing our best to keep our users and their profiles independent from Facebook.  That’s not to say we aren’t integrating with Facebook, but we’re keeping a ‘backup’ in case Facebook’s financial problems lead to more serious problems…. (hopefully not :) )

Till next time, don’t forget to connect.
